I'd give my left arm to work for my government. Not because I am particularly fond of them, but basically once you're in, you're in for life. God, it'd be so hard to have benefits, holidays, job security and good pay. :(

My dad works at the VA and basically has like 3 months worth of vacation time a year. It's amazing.

My cousin works for our provincial government and the benefits she gets in terms of time off is insane. Not all of it is paid, but every time I turn around, she's traveling for something (aside from her job, she is also the commanding officer of the Air Cadets - which is a paid position itself - and often travels in relation to that). If she spends two weeks a month actually at work, I would be surprised.

Edited for clarity.

My mom just retired from the VA. She still works mediation with my dad and their business they have with LA county but she was there for ages.

Well I'd say generation WhateverTheHellWeAre (I graduated last year) are definitely more civic minded. Of course there are still the people who want to be i-bankers and just make cash, but more and more are getting more into the public service mindset.

Especially considering Wall Street has fucked us over for years to come in terms of jobs and loans and basic stability.
