DOMA Follow-Up (From the Daily Kos)

Jun 15, 2009 10:38

Obama's "Justice" department crossed a line today by filing a hideously hateful brief in support of the Defense of Marriage Act. The brief contained legal arguments comparing gay marriage to incest and parroting far right homophobic viewpoints that would make Pat Robertson giddy. Worse, it said that DOMA is constitutional, and that denying gay ( Read more... )

i don't think they'll touch any gay issues until after he's re-elected. that's IF he gets re-elected.

I hate believing this, but it's true.

The sad thing is, they can continue to coast and little about GLBT issues and they'll still be the better party for the GLBT community. I really wish the GOP would radically reform their stance on GLBT rights in the next few years, because that might actually put real pressure on the dems.

you know the republican party can radically reform their stance tomorrow but i won't believe it til i see some action. anyone can make promises, but it's what they do with it once in office (i.e. obama).

This issue isn't about legalistic arguments or what someone is legally supposed to do. It's just not.

Marriage equality is an issue of moral outrage. It is legal discrimination against a class of people for no good reason.

Glad to see someone tell it like it is. I work in family law as well, so I know exactly how this person feels.

Quote from a friend's FB page:

"The argument used by the Obama administration is despicable. Saying gays shouldn't get married because it will cost the government money?!?

"While this was not the strongest case to challenge DOMA, the president could have followed up his administration's brief of DOMA with a statement calling on Congress to repeal it...LIKE HE PROMISED when he was campaigning."

Fuck political realism. Fuck expediency. Fuck it all to hell. And Fuck Obama.

Let's turn up the heat on Obama and show him that we won't take his homophobic bullshit sitting down.

Wow. Them be fightin words.

That said, as much as the Dems and the Obama admin is being sorta fail on and off with gay rights I still feel like something in our favor is going on or is being planned that we just don't know about. Or I'm just very optimistic and am not convinced that Obama is a complete and utter fuck up in this department yet.

Yeah. I'd like to think Obama isn't failing this hard.

I feel the exact same way. I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of action is in the works, but they're not done planning how to go about it. If that's the case, I completely understand the silence when it comes to these and other issues. It would be stupid for the administration to give a play-by-play of planning how to repeal DOMA when they don't even know what exactly to do.

Also, I viewed the DOMA statement as a very, very poorly worded way of saying "DOMA is constitutional, and there's nothing we can do about it unless the action is done through Congress".

This has been bumming me since I read the brief on Friday. You know, I could have dealt with being asked to wait a little while. But the continual little things, and then DADT and now this, the way it's been done, it's just seriously disheartening and no, it's not acceptable. The end.

I agree. The original blog that dissected the brief really was a bit over the top, and I don't think clearly defined what the brief actually was.
