Anyone who followed the 2004 campaign should NOT be surprised in the least. This was a prominent issue discussed at the time, and in the V.P. debate between Cheney and Edwards.

Cheney said at the time that his opinion on same-sex marriage sharply differed from Bush's. He supported it and supported his lesbian daughter.

Cheney is not evil in a gay or women's rights way. He's just evil in a torture and foreign policy sense.

his lesbian daughter

Of course he supports her getting married. She's a good kid and he loves her.

I wish MY dad supported ME getting gay married.

Well, even Dick Cheney has to have one area in which he's not totally fail, you know?

And now I have this image of Dick Cheney telling Barack Obama:

"Barack, I am your father!"

LOL, or at least:

"Barack, I am your eighth cousin!"

Would they? What if the more inclusive, "big-tent" Democrats decided to continue to quietly disown gay marriage in order to attract more Christians and Evangelicals?

Now, that would be an interesting shift.

Right, what if the Democratic party continued its trend of religious -- um -- religiosity? What if the choice weren't between strong government + religious freedom versus limited government + religious extremism?

What if it were more like limited government + religious freedom versus strong government + religious extremism? Something like an explicitly Christian Socialist Party and a secular Libertarian Party (but not a crazy one).

Personally, I'm not immediately sure whom I'd support.

Nevermind, I fail at reading. I guess this is one thing I can give him credit for, with his being supportive of his daughter. That said, I stand by the second half of my comment. Evil bastard.

I have a hard time working up any but the most lukewarm endorsement of him, even on this issue. It's consistent with his attitude that anything that affects him and his is considered differently from the needs and desires of those who oppose him.
