This is my first ever post so I apologize first hand for any mistakes to come. I hope the cut works

Obama's statment on "Armenian Remembrance Day"

"Ninety four years ago, one of the great atrocities of the 20th century began. Each year, we pause to remember the 1.5 million Armenians who were subsequently massacred or marched to their death in the ( Read more... )

I'm not exactly sure about which way i feel about the armenian massacres. While it was a horrible event in history, I don't quite understand why if the Turks are willing to take it to the international court of justice, and rule on it further, why the Armenians won't agree to this as well. A lot of people say there's not enough historical evidence :\

It seems fishy.

and If the Armenians won't take it to the International court of Justice, then the US shouldn't have to call it a genocide.

This was Obama doing his job.. playing politics. The US needs Turkey's alliance. Maybe we'll start calling it genocide officially and recogonize it on the level of the holocaust when the Armenians are willing to take it to court and prove it.

The historical facts have been presented ever since the era of the genocide in 1915-1918. There are countless foreign eyewitness reports and memoirs, pictures, government documents [Turkish and American alike], and numerous documentaries that list all the various proofs of genocide. People like US ambassador to Turkey Henry Morgenthau, and numerous Red Cross workers wrote memoirs about what they witnessed. Armin T Wegner was able to photograph victims that are some of the rare footage from an era when photos and videos were extremely rare. Very few seconds of video footage have also survived. American Newspapers like the Boston Globe and NYT have multiple articles in their archives that date back to the days of the actual genocide with the numbers of victims rising as the months went by ( ... )

I don't know enough about it do deny the fact that it was a genocide, if I made it seem that way, it was wrong. I know there's evidence of a massacre and possible/probable genocide occurring, I wasn't saying there wasn't any ( ... )

But the Holocaust could have been prevented and millions of Jews could be saved if Hitler wasn't inspired by how easily the world forgot the Armenians and the Young Turk's ability to get away with a crime against humanity.
That's something I came across more than once while researching the Holocaust this year in depth. To a degree, sometimes this still feels true, with the genocide even after all the work done after the Holocaust.

It's something Obama recognized in his recent speech. Forgetting these crimes makes it more likely to happen. He's being a bit of a hypocrite when he's not owning up fully towards what happened with the Armenians. He's got to put his money where his mouth is for his talks on acknowledging the past to truly mean all that it can.
