Apparently in california it isnt unpopular, as shown by prop (h)8 passing.

Well, Prop 22 won by around 30% back in 2000 as opposed to Prop 8 winning by only 5%. That's a significant jump.

Yeah, but right now I would characterize it more as a controversial opinion than an unpopular one, just because the issue it so split.
