University of California system increases tuition by nearly 10 percent

Rising unemployment and plummeting consumer spending in California has taken its toll on the state's university system. Since California now faces a $42 billion deficit, state funding toward public universities has been cut by $115 million dollars. In an effort to close the budget gap, the University of California Board of Regents has decided to raise tuition by another 9.3 percent. Students can expect to pay higher tuition fees beginning in May.
