i'm 25 (just turned friday) and i use complete sentences/words and proper punctuation in text messages it bugs people so much. i text a lot too, it's just a habit i can't break.
Me too! (I'll be 26 this year.) The only time I use txtspk is when I'm texting someone in Tagalog/Filipino. But English has to stay and look English, at least IMO. (OH, I use acronyms like IMO OMG WTF all the time though.)
in texts, I will do whatever I can to A.) Make it take less time to type, considering I don't have a full keyboard, and B.) Make it as short as possible in the event that the text spills over into a 2nd message.
I do that. (I'm 19.) A lot of the shorthand drives me nuts. Friend of mine does it and when I ask her to email me class notes I actually have to go in and edit them because it takes too long for my brain to process "2=too, to, two" and 4="for, four" and u="you" etc.
Occasionally I'll do some shorthand if I need to make it very quick, and I will occasionally use shorthand acronyms and txtspk for dramatic effect, for tone (akin to using emoticons I suppose), and ironically.
(I wrote an entire paper on this for my English class my sophomore year of high school. Everyone else chose topics like euthanasia and abortion and I was like "THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IS GOING TO SHIT".)
To be fair, shorthand should be acceptable in class notes as well. You're trying to write things as quickly as possible.
The English language isn't necessarily going to shit - people just don't have the time to write out their class notes in full, proper English or spend 10 minutes on a simple text message.

lmao I don't necessarily think the English language is going to shit (unless... have you seen England English texting? yikes!) because languages constantly evolve with the times. BUT, I do think we're evolving into scary territory on some fronts, considering people who say "L O L" out loud and what not. Reminds me of Idiocracy's ~future~ language.
I refuse to use anything other than proper grammar in my IMs. I've embraced a few common abbreviations but I just can't make myself abandon proper English entirely.
27 here, and me, too. I hated it because it took like an hour to have a conversation that would have taken 3 minutes actually speaking. I got rid of texting a couple years ago because it's just annoying, tbh.
