What is the point? People need to cut this petty shit out and quit fighting over a freaking PIECE OF LAND. Maybe I don't understand this whole conflict and the history of it, but this is ridiculous. That's one thing Catholics got right: making Vatican City its only country. Maybe if all the main holy cities were their own countries, this kind of stuff wouldn't happen.

They didn't really get it right, though, at least not intentionally. Their former territory, the Papal States (most of the central part of the peninsula), only became part of Italy by coercion.

I agree with you completely and believe that in order to move forward, both sides - not just the side that is in power - must amend their actions. But the person I was replying to chose to incorrectly explain the situation. Some of the comments I read hear (not what you just said) are unbelievable.

Haha, pointing out that it was a poor analogy was my point but I don't mind getting into a conversation. : )
Where I disagree is where you can expect a group of people in extreme poverty, under an occupation, and also basically in a state of civil war with themselves, to act in a way that an established state would. Israel has the power in this situation, and thus has responsibilities that Palestine can't be expected to have.
I have so much sympathy for the people of Gaza right now and if I were one of them, it is very likely that Hamas would have had my vote. They have managed to provide jobs and food (not enough, though, but *just* enough), which I don't think any prior organization has managed to do. I do think that the people of that region need a leader like MLK or Ghandi, one who preaches non-violence because I have to believe that Israel would be willing to work with such a figure. Although Israel has been "winning," they certainly don't seem to be benefiting.
Maybe I just don't understand...
