Hunh. This was a really interesting article.

And I kind of see the reaction of the younger Chinese as more proof that China's emphasis on teaching patriotism and nationalism, as well as stoking the Us vs Them thing (especially towards Japan; don't even get me started on the whole textbook problem and the hypocrisy of it when looking at how China has so massively whitewashed the history it puts in her own textbooks) to help with national pride has, well, worked. If this is a good thing or not, I'm not so sure.

Nationalism is on the rise across Asia and especially among East Asian countries. This can bring a lot of problems due to history and territorial disputes between China, South Korea and Japan. The CCP is definitely using nationalism and it is induced in the education system (especially with regards to problems of history and China's victimization). The rapid development of China has also helped nationalism grow as the population become more and more proud over China's achievement. There's also this underlying complex (in my opinion) from being exploited by the West and colonial powers and now China is achieving its renaissance and regaining its previous glory. Keep hearing Chinese people talk about this is China's century.

I agree that there is a stoking of Us vs Them mentality. I find the growth of nationalism pretty troubling across Asia. Too much and it's jingoism. >_<; Too much and it starts fanning the flames of disputes related to the state and ones that go beyond the state and delve into culture.
