Reminder to Progressives: Abortion is an Economic Issue

Apr 21, 2017 19:52

Bernie Sanders traveled to Nebraska this week to throw his support behind Omaha Democratic mayoral candidate, Heath Mello, who is running against the incumbent Republican mayor, Jean Stothert. A Mello win, Sanders has said, would give hope to other “progressive Democrats” in conservative states ( Read more... )

This is all true. I disagree with Bernie here, and with the DNC leadership thinking this is okay to do. Unfortunately there are democrat politicians who are pro-life and govern that way. We need progressive democrats who are progressive on all these important issues.

if you demand bold political imagination but become extremely pragmatic about reproductive justice maybe think about why

We had a Dem House majority in 2009 that was internally mostly pro-choice & they still got an anti-abortion amendment into the ACA for a bit

Abortion rights win everywhere now on the ballot. Every district has enough people that you can find pro-choice progressives & not settle.

Bernie's explanation sucks. This guy didn't just vote for that ultrasound bill, he co-sponsored it. I suppose it is possible that Bernie was not aware of that beforehand (Planned Parenthood apparently wasn't, since his rating with them was an A+) but his comments afterward are indefensible.

Yea, I agree.

There is this tweet below, not sure how legitimate it is tho. Talking about how Mello is personally pro-life, but would "uphold abortion rights as mayor" (still problematic, as if you are pro-life then you would lean towards policy's that support pro-life solutions, rather than unequivocally supporting abortion rights). Talking about how supporting that bill was a democratic compromise to make it less awful, ie. an option to view the ultrasound rather than have it mandatory.

@roqchams If this refers to Mello (endorsed by DNC, Perez & Bernie, then Perez threw Bernie under the bus), his record has been heavily misrepresented pic.twitter.com/ZdNXWlCW8i

I'm not sure of the exact contents of the bill in that level of detail, but his statements since then haven't corrected the record, which you'd think he would do if it was being so misrepresented. It's meaningless that he says he will uphold abortion rights as mayor. He has no control over that, he might as well have said he won't rule one Roe v Wade as mayor lol.

If it was a democratic compromise that he really wasn't so proud of, he should not have sponsored the bill.

This is what I was talking about in my last conversation with you, btw. That progressives who focused on broad economic ideals, who insisted that the broadness was inclusive, would in fact privilege that supposed inclusivity over specific issues that are the focus of marginalized groups. This is what I was saying as to why I couldn't believe a fucking word anyone with the "economics for everyone" opinion was saying as to why focus needed to shift. That they could not answer well or adequately how they would deal with conflict. This is it.
