The federal court for the Eastern District of New York issued an emergency stay halting deportations under President Donald Trump’s executive order banning entry to the US from seven majority-Muslim countries tonight, following widespread protests at airports around the country.

1. They are still stuck in detention, the stay coves only sending them back. (and as mentioned, it does affect a massive range of people, such as green card holders who were out of the country at the time of the order, as well)

2. If this ban was so important, why aren't countries like Saudi Arabia on it? - Oh, yeah, Trump business locations.

He's just getting started, folks. I'm sure he's got much more in mind.

This "Trump business locations" thing is a red herring. The countries involved in this ban are countries that were already identified several years ago as being terrorist hotbeds, and people who have traveled to them were already singled out as being ineligible for the visa waiver program. This was already problematic, but Friday's executive order does not just make it more difficult to visit America, it completely bans Muslim green card holders, Muslim refugees, and other Muslim citizens of those countries who are traveling for business or pleasure. It is a whole nother level of disgusting. But the countries in particular? They're just the same ones that were already on a blacklist.

That still doesn't explain why Saudi Arabia wasn't on the list before, since almost all actual 'muslim terrorists' committing crimes in the US were either Saudis or Pakistani. Neither of which country is on the list.

(not saying the list should exist at all, but if this really were about protecting the US from terrorism, then Saudi Arabia should be one of the first countries to look at. But then Saudi Arabia is a rich ally with oil interests so...)

Totally agree with you here. Personally I find the idea of immigration blacklists unacceptable, whatever they are based on (country of birth, religion, age, whatever), but I could at least respect the Republicans for being ideologically consistent if they blacklisted only the countries shown to have exported terrorism to the US. Even though since 9/11 most terrorism in the US was home-grown anyways.

Imo using Obama's blacklist for a blanket Muslim ban is lazy because it lumps relatively stable countries like Iran in with literal warzones like Syria. Let's not even get into how many of those warzones are a direct result of America's own actions in the region, or the fact that it is EXACTLY warzones where we would expect refugees would be attempting to flee to safety from. Ugh... ffs. This whole thing makes me so mad.
