Kaine delivers entire speech in Spanish at Miami church
Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine on Sunday became the first candidate on a major-party presidential ticket to deliver a campaign speech entirely in Spanish.
"Buenos dias a todos. Estoy bien contento a visitar con ustedes el aqui in el Pneuma Church," Kaine began his speech at Pneuma Church located in Miami, which translates to "Good morning everyone. I'm very happy to visit with you here at the Pneuma Church."
"Yo soy cristiano, un catolico," Kaine said, which translates to "I'm a Christian, a Catholic," before diving into his own faith - saying he has an "iglesia bien especial," or very special church, in Richmond, Virginia. He also highlighted his mission trip to Honduras.
In addition he discussed the faith of Hillary Clinton, who is a Methodist.
The state's voter registration deadline was pushed back to Tuesday due to Hurricane Matthew, so the Virginia senator encouraged parishioners to register to vote.
After the speech, he was blessed by the pastor.
Florida, which has a large Latino population, is a key state in the election. Nearly a quarter of Clinton's Florida organizing staff speaks Spanish, according to CNN. Currently, Clinton is ahead in the Sunshine state, with 45.8 percent compared to Donald Trump's 42.2 percent, according to POLITICO Battleground States polling average.
According to CNN, a campaign aide said there has been a "huge spike" in vote-by-mail requests from Latino voters in Florida.
