The interesting thing about being MTF is that you end up experiencing two layers of prejudice. If you are in a situation where you do not need to be out and you are not read, then people treat you like shit because you are a woman. But if you are out, then people treat you like shit because you are a trannie. The biggest shock to me when I became a woman was realizing how poorly women are treated on a daily basis.

Here's the good news. Women have been surviving oppression for thousands of years, achieving great things and becoming remarkable people. As a MTF it's easy to get hung up on how awful things are post-transition because you have also experienced the privilege of society perceiving you as a man. But then you realize this is the same stuff women deal with every day (see the story right above this one about the woman not being treated by a Catholic doctor). Women are resilient. All people are resilient. Life is not always as easy for us as it is for those with greater privilege, but we make it through. And i'd rather have a tough life and be happy than have an easy life and be sad.
