For instance, it's very possible that just some random hacker got this information on a whim, didn't really know or care what it was, then put it up in the darknet somewhere. Later on some foreign intelligence agencies may have stumbled across it and then pointed Assange in the right direction, knowing that this Drudge 2.0 clownshoe would release it at the optimum time to help their propaganda arm.
Here in Germany there is a Russian media network that go out of their way to film left-wing protests and riots. On one hand it's nice that there is finally a media outlet that gives a shit about our causes. On the other hand, you can see that all their YouTube footage is being targeted at local fascists to provoke further conflict, and outside of YouTube the video is fed back right back to the Russian people to sell the idea that Europe is a hotbed of chaos and political unrest. And, of course, when Russians come over here and watch our media they think it's just as biased against them.
So, yeah, although I love the conspiracy theory, I don't believe it's necessarily as cut and dried as Trump->Russian oligarchy->Putin->FSB/GRU->WikiLeaks. I think the world of intelligence/counter-intelligence, 1%er corruption and nihilistic kid hackers is a lot more gray than that. Which, btw, is also why I don't buy into that whole thing that Hillary is a shill for Wall St. Life is complicated, politics is complicated. We all just try make the best of it.
