One dead, three injured in shooting near Dorchester school.
A teenager was killed and three other people were shot Wednesday afternoon in an outburst of gunfire near the Jeremiah Burke High School in Dorchester, police said.
The person who died was in his late teens, according to Officer James Kenneally, a department spokesman. Two other victims were also in their late teens, he said, while a woman in her 60s was treated at the scene for a graze wound to her leg.
Kenneally said he could not provide information about whether the teenage victims were students.
The shooting was reported in the area of 56 Washington St. shortly after 1 p.m., police said. An active search for the shooter is underway in the area.
The high school and three other schools were placed in safe mode after the incident, preventing students from leaving. The other affected schools were the Dearborn STEM Academy, the Martin Luther King, Jr. K-8 School, and the Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle School.
A frantic scene unfolded on Washington Street, with relatives rushing to see if students were OK. Several Boston police officers stood in front of the Burke, which was cordoned off by yellow crime scene tape.
One young woman collapsed, saying, “He didn’t do nothing to nobody.”
Two young men not in handcuffs were placed in police cars. Officers assured people that the two were not under arrest. One of the young men was sobbing.
Neighbors sat on front steps, watching Boston and State Police investigators comb the scene in front of the school.
“It’s hard to believe,” said Marlene Mena, 30, who lives in an apartment building across from the Burke. “There are a lot of kids out during the day. There is usually a patrol car on the street, when school lets out. You don’t really hear this during the day.”
Her mother, Luz Sanchez, had rushed to her daughter’s apartment, frightened by the memory of the shooting death of another daughter 10 months ago, just a block away. Her daughter, Grisel Sanchez, who was shot to death on Normandy Street, would have turned 32 Thursday.
“They still don’t know what happened to her, “ Sanchez said, noting that police are still investigating that case.
