Anti-LGBT Texas Rep. Now Claims We Won’t Survive in Space

Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert is no stranger to making outlandish and unverifiable claims about LGBT people.

But on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday, Gohmert suggested that the future of the human race might be in danger because sending gay people into space would doom future galactic colonies, reports Right Wing Watch.

Gohmert opened his remarks by rejecting the existence of transgender people, suggesting that they have a series of “mental disorders.” But that simply means that “these are people that we’re to love, encourage, help any way we can,” Gohmert said.

After a brief biblical interlude, the congressman’s speech got downright apocalyptic, positing what humankind would do in the face of an asteroid or some other cataclysmic event.

“We’d have space ship that can go, as Matt Damon did in the movie, plant a colony somewhere, we can have humans survive this terrible disaster about to befall,” said Gohmert. “If you could decide what 40 people you put on the spacecraft that would save humanity, how many of those would be same-sex couples? You’re wanting to save humankind for posterity, basically a modern-day Noah, you have that ability to be a modern day Noah, you can preserve life. How many same-sex couples would you take from the animal kingdom and from humans to put on a spacecraft to perpetuate humanity and the wildlife kingdom?”

This isn’t the first time the Texas congressman has expressed concern about the future of the human race. Two months after the U.S. Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land in 2015, Gohmert told a youth group in Washington, D.C. that opposite-sex marriages were the only kind “preferred” by “nature,” since same-sex couples stranded on an island for 200 years couldn’t “sustain life.” He repeated the claim as recently as March, when he told out Huffington Post Queer Voices editor Michelangelo Signorile that same-sex couples would never survive if placed on a deserted island because they cannot "reproduce."

It's the Matt Damon reference that really brings his argument home.... Fucking goober. We don't have a 'same-sex marriage' tag? And I'm sad there's no 'Matt Damon' tag, heh. Any suggestions welcome.

homophobia, texas, lgbtq / gender & sexual minorities, marriage equality
