Trump of the East: Meet Rodrigo Duterte (& Mini Round-Up of Election Results From The Philippines)

May 10, 2016 01:44

Filipinos love an action man, not just in the movies but in politics too. And you can't get more of an action man than politician Rodrigo Duterte.

His hometown, Davao City, was once a violent no-go area overrun by criminals. But he turned it around when he became mayor, wielding brutal tactics including, allegedly, death squads.

Now the hard man of city hall wants to take on the presidency and despite - or maybe because of - his fearsome approach, this outspoken statesman has a real chance of winning the top seat.

101 East joins him on the road as he campaigns for the Philippines' presidency.

Philippines's election was held on May 9. According to results, Duterte is currently leading with 38% in a 5 man race; and his opponent in second place has already conceded. With 75% of votes in, he is slated to be the next President of The Republic of The Philippines. God help my country men and let us hope history doesn't repeat here in the US. [Sauce]

As of writing, Leni Robredo, a member of the House of Representative who has a great track record for being a human rights activist, is leading the race for Vice President with BongBong (it's his nickname, doesn't make it sound less stupid tho)Marcos coming in at second. His parents are indeed Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos, the same ones that ruled the country for 20 years under Dictatorship and 9 of those years under Martial Law. It's currently a tight race but I'm hoping Leni pulls through and wins. [Sauce]

It is interesting to note that there was a historic turn out this election with 81.6% registered voters coming out to vote. Also, Election Day is a non-working holiday there and the people generally are pretty insistent on exercising their right to vote with the average being around 75%. [Sauce]

In good news, Geraldine Roman is the first openly transgender to be elected to office in the Philippines. "Roman speaks five languages, holds two master’s degrees, and was a senior editor at the Spanish News Agency, before returning to the Philippines from Spain in 2012 to care for her father." Her mother previously held the congressional seat she won. [Sauce]

ETA: Manny Pacquiao won his senatorial bid, which means bad news for the LGBTQ community in the Philippines. [Sauce]
