It would be much better to get rid of the Draft altogether, but this seems fine I guess. If it was motivation to get rid of the draft altogether though lets use it and be done with it once and for all.

The part where they want to spend even more money on the military and get more soldiers though? No thanks.

That's the one good thing about the draft existing though? As it is now, only poor and working class people sign up to join the military bc the military offers to pay for their school, promise a decent career, etc. The more well-off people have a choice to not bother at all, or get cushy jobs / perks and never have to worry about frontline combat. Which helps enable the top brass to see soldiers as disposable because they're just poor people and can be replaced. At least when the draft was in practice a lot more people were anti-war bc there was no guarantee you wouldn't be picked.

Which is mostly true, except that in practice the rich and well-connected got student deferments, fake medical excuses, and stints in the National Guard to keep them out of Vietnam.

The National Guard isn't an escape hatch anymore now that it's being used overseas like any other branch. I'd been planning to sign up for the National Guard until that happened.

My cousin signed up for the Guard in the 90s to pay for his college and he ended up doing 2 tours in Afghanistan, so yeah, unfortunately it's not so much of a "safe option" anymore.

It never worked that way, though. Rich, connected ppl, always had way to avoid combat and tough spots in the military.
