March 2, 2016 Up until now Republicans have largely ignored Trump, assuming that his support would die out or too afraid to risk the blowback of speaking up against him. However, with it looking more and more likely that he's going to secure the nomination the GOP is finally stepping up to stop Trump.
Tim Miller, the spokesman for Our Principles PAC told TIME, "Hillary could be in a jail cell and she’d beat Donald Trump in a landslide. The takeaway from [Super Tuesday] is that in many states over half of the electorate said they’d be unhappy with Donald Trump as the nominee.”
The GOP has realized that people don't care about his ridiculous policies and that his candidacy is built upon him being a truth-telling, successful businessman who can beat Hillary Clinton. Keeping this in mind the GOP's plan centers around attacking Trump on a personal and professional level.
“We have to play his game. We’re looking for what’s salacious.”
Our Principles PAC has already spent millions in ad buys in Illinois, Michigan, and Florida criticizing Trump's failed university. Another PAC, Club for Growth Action, has spent $1.5 million in Florida markets to attack Trump's failed businesses and eminent domain.
Former Romney strategist Stuart Stevens added that it's time for other candidates to step up and attack Trump, "Trump has been in a race where he’s been fighting in a race where none of the other candidate were fighting him, so of course he was doing well."
Even with this new plan in place there are concerns that the Republican establishment waited too long to act.
Source Drumpf supporters are already complaining about this on Twitter, but it looks like
Mitt Romney is following this model.
