Perfect icon.

The Right really does seem to have this difficulty with how they think people 'should' act or react vs. what they actually do. Cutting welfare doesn't make people who are poor suddenly 'wise up' and stop having children or work for a promotion. Keeping drugs illegal may scare some off from using them, but it's not a solution. Keeping tweens and teens ignorant about sex doesn't keep them from having it, or in the rare cases it does it leaves them unprepared for when they do grow up, get married, and start having sex with their spouse.

Yep, that's one form of leaving them unprepared for a good, mature sexual relationship.

Wtf. I thought fundies were all about having lots of kids, i.e., little servants for Jeebus. These doofuses folks are going to have a lot of trouble pulling that off, lol.

This is striking for me, as a product of Catholic education, because I remember something about Paul teaching that to truly be a pure and holy Christian*, you should remain single and abstinent for your entire life. Then he sort of begrudgingly added that if you simply *must* give into those fleshly urges, you better get married first.

Of course, he was also laboring under the belief that the Second Coming was going to occur within his lifetime so he wasn't really prioritizing the need to birth a steady supply of new Christians.

*Applies to men only because those gosh darn wicked temptresses will only distract you from devoting yourself fully to Christ.

He said that the single man or woman who is dedicated to God has more time and energy to devote to the Lord's work. He definitely did not forbid marriage. (1 Corinthians 7:8-9: 8 But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain even as I. 9 But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion).

It was St. Augustine of Hippo, a fourth century former playboy who converted to Christianity and became a bishop, who was so against marriage and who taught that marital sex was shameful and should only be practiced at night in the dark. He was a Roman Catholic saint, a rather short sighted one sometimes.

I don't think there is any place where it says he believed the Second Coming was anything but delayed for the sake of allowing more people to repent.

All of the Apostles said that Jesus was coming at a time when most people would least expect it, and that no one knew when.

I always thought this was in reference to having sex before marriage. Like he was saying, wait till marriage, but if you really want to have sex, then get married first.

It is coming from Paul's point of view that the Christian is better off in many ways if he or she can just go without sex. Then he says if not getting married is not working, then get married.

No Christian should have sex before or outside of marriage -- fornication and adultery are forbidden in both the Old Testament an the New.

"But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion." Some people think that he means if someone can't help longing for a mate and a family, then the person should get married.

But if the person is a sex addict, and only wants to get married for sexual purposes, he or she is better off not marrying. Men sometimes underwent castration/orchiectomy in order to control themselves. Women I guess just isolated themselves if they had a self control problem.

On the flip side, giving kids all the relevant info about sex and contraception, free of guilt and shame, that doesn't make them want to start fucking where they didn't before. Their rates of being sexually active or not aren't all that different from the ones getting ab only. Teens in the US on average are actually younger than teens in the Netherlands when they first become sexually active.

It also reminds me of something I saw on tumblr, about a teenager who was babysitting this girl who just had her first period. The girl was panicking because she'd never heard of periods and didn't know why she was bleeding, so she asked her babysitter for help.

He ended up calling an ambulance, because he didn't have a clue what was going on either.

Not sure if it really happened, it is tumblr after all, and people love telling stuff like that. But the thing is, I could see it happen, just because American sexual education is that bad, because there's so many people who are terrified of teaching children about their own bodies.
