My beloved's saying they've got the entire downtown core locked down, so most everybody's inside and safe, but still. It's never happy when something like this hits town. A Globe reporter also caught video inside the building where the shooting happened that includes gunshots: Globe footage captures shooting in Parliament building

This happened a few blocks from my office building, and it's pretty much all anyone's been able to talk about today. One of the officers in the footage from inside Parliament is my co-worker's mother, and another co-worker may have known the solider who was shot this morning. :/

So far, they've confirmed 2 deaths -- the soldier who was shot in front of the War Memorial this morning, and the gunman who entered a building on Parliament Hill. Police haven't confirmed any other shooters, but are still looking.

I recommend following the CBC for updates over CNN, because CNN's reports have been pretty sloppy, from what I've seen...

And for what it's worth, everything seems pretty calm outside of the lockdown perimeter.

No offense, but I don't care about the terrorist. I care about Corporal Nathan Cirillo, the unarmed young man shot at the War Memorial. I know it's important to understand the whys of what happened, but giving what I feel is excessive coverage to the murderer just feels wrong, and can even act as a catalyst for copycats.

Wasn't he also guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier? Just horrific

Yes he was. In Canada, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is part of the War Memorial in Ottawa.

This is terrible. I've got a dear friend in the Canadian reserves who has a similar role to Corporal Cirillo, and he is distraught about this.

From what I have seen, the response of the Canadian public has made my longing to immigrate there so much stronger. Well done, you guys are awesome and are an excellent example to the rest of the world for how to act in a crisis.
