When Candace Noonan opened the door of her Boca Raton, Florida home to a strange man asking for a glass of water, she had no idea the guy was running from police-or that he was a cat person.
Earlier that day, Daniel Pinedo Velapatino had been involved in a high-speed chase, which resulted in major damage to multiple cars, including a police cruiser.
Thinking Velapatino was a landscaper, she let him in her home and went into the kitchen to get him a beverage. When she came back, she noticed the young man had let himself into her house and popped a squat in her living room to play with her cats.
“It was odd, very odd,” Noonan told reporters. “He was stroking my cat. It almost looked like he either was on drugs or he was mentally handicapped.”
Once Noonan’s husband came home, Velapatino fled out the back door. However, cops were hot on his heels and managed to catch him while he tried to jump in a canal.
Noonan’s hunch tuned out to be right because investigators said Valepatino had been up all night taking drugs.
The 21-year-old is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a friend’s wallet, crashing a Lexus into numerous cars (and a fire hydrant), and fleeing from police.
His alleged motive? Velapatino told them he needed the money because he owed his mother $2,000.
He loves cats and his mother. If he could just get off the drugs and stop stealing, he has the potential to be a real prince.
