I live in Quebec so my fb feed was filled with the news of the baby being kidnapped, amber alerts, etc. I'm really glad that the baby was found, though.

I'm so relieved the baby was returned to her family.

I'm wondering what security that hospital has in place. In both hospitals where I gave birth, the only way they let a person leave the maternity ward with a baby is if they have matching identification bracelets. I'm certain they don't let staff walk out with babies. I'm really just not clear how this could have happened. I hope at any rate that it was enough of an eye opener that the hospital will put stricter rules in place.

Sounds about like my experience in the US. Although I'm not sure US hospitals are consistent. Both of mine were newer facilities, and I wonder if older ones that still use nurseries don't have as many security measures in place? Yours sounds like one that I assume didn't have a nursery either? Even with the NICU, they had space for parents to sleep in at least an adjoining room from which they could SEE their baby. I think in the US they don't even include nurseries in new hospitals anymore. I could be mistaken.

I gave birth at two different hospitals in NJ, about an hour away from each other, and had entirely different experiences ( ... )

I'm glad the baby was found unharmed and so quicly, but people here are being ridiculously mean and ignorant regarding the woman who did this. Pretty much everyone I know says she deserves to die or rot in prison for ever. What the fuck? She is clearly mentally ill and was probably not fully aware of what she was doing. Have a little compassion, goddammit. I'm not defending her, what she did was wrong and she deserves to be prosecuted accordingly, but she also deserves medical help and I hope she gets it.

Exactly. What people should focus on is that the baby is safe and wasn't harmed. This could have ended SO much worse.

I've mostly been focusing my annoyance with the hospital for that being able to happen. But I completely agree with you here.

The police took the kidnapper straight to the hospital for evaluation and haven't interviewed her yet. That the woman is suspected to be mentally disturbed is there in the article, if people would just read between the lines.

One of the good things to come out of social media. I see things like this on Facebook and Tumblr a good bit, and I reblog/share as much as I can. I know that WUSA9 News out of DC does this on FB a good bit when people go missing. (I'm sure other stations in DC do, too, 9 is just the only one I follow on FB.)

I'm glad the baby's safe, and I'm imagining her as an older kid saying, 'Pfft, I had more adventure in my first day of life than most people have in their lifetimes.'

I hope the woman gets help. And I have to admit I'm curious as to whether she was taking the child for herself or stealing her for someone else. If it's the latter, I hope they find out who and stop that.

I'm so glad this story has a happy ending, and what a gorgeous baby! Those poor parents. They must have been terrified.
