I hate that my first question was, "Is he black?" Because honestly, with the way things have been, I wouldn't have been surprised in the slightest.

The horrible irony is that he wanted to go into the military, he wanted to do a job not too much unlike what the police are intended for - to serve and protect.

I can't even imagine what his family must be going through.

The disproportionate abuse, arrest, and slaughter of black males is meant to make everyone else think they don't have to worry about it happening to them. That is its sole purpose. It is the emergent strategy of an ungoverned police state fortifying its absolute power over all of us. In truth, nobody is safe from police abuse. To assume it wouldn't happen to a white kid is to play into the complacency.

I'm simply stating that the sickening amount of black kids being killed in the name of bullshit like Stand Your Ground makes me hear news like this and wonder if yet another family lost their son because he was a PoC and therefore deemed a threat by some overzealous, gun-toting white dude. I'm pretty sure the "disproportionate abuse, arrest, and slaughter of black males" is also, in part, due to good old-fashioned racism.

Homicide rates have actually been going DOWN for the last fifty years. What we're seeing are the effects of a pervasive information society.

"The U.S. homicide rate declined by nearly half (49%), from 9.3 homicides per 100,000 U.S. residents in 1992 to 4.7 in 2011, falling to the lowest level since 1963. From 2002 to 2011, the average homicide rate for males was 3.6 times higher than the rate for females. The average homicide rate for blacks was 6.3 times higher than the rate for whites."
