I find mobile app/game marketing to be so, so interesting. Like I have been fascinated by the Snapchat saga and how their team has turned down two multibillion-dollar attempts to buy them out, despite having made no money yet. I don't think they're stupid, but I'm just really curious as to how they plan to make money other than the somewhat-obvious "sell ads and in-app purchases." Sure, but what KINDS of ads and in-game purchases? How are you going to get teenagers and young adults, largely the users of Snapchat, to buy things in-app (when they often don't have credit or debit cards) and not discard your app for something better once you put annoying ads on there?

I'm similarly curious about King and Candy Crush Saga. They've shown themselves to be absolutely ruthless when it comes to their stupid game, but at least in my experience, mobile games tend to be really big for a minute and then - boom, people move on. I remember when everyone was playing Angry Birds and then suddenly nobody was playing Angry Birds. I also remember when everyone was playing Candy Crush, but few people I know are still playing it. It's addictive...but after you get to a certain point you kind of have to make in-app purchases to advance. Seems like people have moved on to Flappy Bird, or at least tried to, lol.

-my husband is my reference point for mobile gaming. He's the last person I'd expect to have been a mobile gamer, since he's in that coveted AAA/core gamer group that lays down $60 for the new RPG or shooter - but when he's not playing Rage, he's playing Flappy Bird. LOL.

The thing with mobile gaming is that - how t phrase it - there's not really that much money in it. Obviously Angry Birds and Candy Crush are the exceptions but remember Zynga?
The good thing about mobile games is that you can make them dirt cheap but the problem is if they cost more than say, two or three dollars, you're not going to sell them.
And it's been a gaming -ism for the past few years that all the console games were going under because of the mobile market and I don't quite agree with that yet. The business model is extremely shaky because it does rely on either very small microtransactions, ads, or making a super-popular game which isn't guaranteed.

Flappy Bird SHOULD have been the new craze but I think the owner was more worried about getting sued. Apparently Nintendo wasn't all that nonplussed though so who knows - it might come out again.
