Yeah, I was pissed at that. Computer repairmen are about as unscrupulous as mechanics, it seems. I hope by "all equipment" they meant a new computer only, not the monitor and peripherals as well, but I kind of think they meant both? IDK, I worked on my college's IT for a couple years and the things students said that computer techs had told them their computers needed in order to be fixed...

There are some pretty noxious attacks out there where it can be easier to just get a new computer/hard drive, and wiping + restoring the drive is always easier than removing malware. But out-and-out disabling attacks where you must get new equipment? Extremely rare. I've heard of attacks on BIOS and firmware (although these are potentially no longer possible/internet legends?), and it's theoretically possible to physically destroy a chip by screwing around to make it overheat and fail (although again possibly internet legends?). But I highly doubt that's what happened here.

Some opportunistic jerk computer guy is taking advantage of this woman, who must be scared out of her mind already.

I wondered about that. I know there are lots of ways to get rid of malware. And if worst comes to worst, reformatting the hard drive would get rid of EVERYTHING, correct?

Of course, that would be a major pain in the ass, since you have to back up all your files beforehand, and then reinstall Windows plus all your applications and other files afterwards. But still a lot less painful than shelling out thousands of dollars for new equipment!

Methinks somebody wanted to make a few extra bucks. Methinks that somebody is in need of a good kick in the ass.

Even better: reformat the hard drive and install Linux. Windows is about as secure as....well, a house made entirely out of windows.

This is so fucking horrifying, but it's good to know that jackass got what was coming to him.

I really hate that your random, everyday guy can be this hateful, this horrible, this *fucked up*, and not see a thing wrong with it.

Confession: When pieces this long are posted, I rarely read the whole thing word for word. My ADHD brain just doesn't have the patience. I'll read the beginning and the closing and skim the rest to get the gist.

THIS post was different. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop till I got to the end. And OMFG, what a vile, slimy, disgusting cockroach that Hunter Moore asshole is! I hope he loses everything he owns in all the lawsuits he has coming to him. (If he still lives with his parents, I doubt he has that many assets, but still.) I also hope he goes to jail for a very long time, and that his cellmate is Hannibal Lecter's EXTRA-evil twin.

Of course, it's not clear whether any of his fuckery is going to be prosecutable, due to the laws not having caught up to the capabilities of today's technology, but a girl can dream!

If nothing else, they should be able to get him for the threats he's made, possibly for encouraging people to commit suicide too. They might also be able to do something for all those legal papers he's ignored (those might be civil rather than criminal cases though).

I read the whole thing too. OMG. Now I'm telling all my friends to take any body pictures of themselves off their phone. Period.

This is horrifying, and the information needs to be spread everywhere. Everything I've heard before boils down to "don't post pictures you don't want everyone to see" and "don't let your boyfriend take nude pictures of you"--in other words, it's your own fault if your naked pictures get out there. Nothing about hacks or photoshopping. Never any mention about how some of the photos were not intended to be "sexy", might be medical or silly or a way to track your body's changes. Or not real at all ( ... )

This - I would love to see the consumers of Moore's site outed. Let them see how much fun it is to lose their jobs, be shunned by their families, worry about lawsuits and everything else that comes with being targeted by asshats.

That would be fantastic. I'd like to start with the people submitting the photos and personal information first, particularly the one who hacked the medical files.

The sad thing is that so many of these people would think it was horribly unfair that their privacy had been invaded and they were being attacked for what they did in their free time.

If they find out who hacked the medical records to get some of the photos, that's a violation of HIPPA right there. Which is very very very prosecutable.

I would like to find Hunter Moore and those like him, and feed them to ants.
