God, that poor man. All that torture (and I do mean that literally) because he "clenched his buttocks".
Even if you suspect drug smuggling in his body, surely not finding anything on a fucking x-ray should be reason enough to start believing that he is actually innocent.
And as for "hard to imagine this happening in X", shit like this will always happen if you give assholes a uniform and a gun, or simply the veneer of authority. They'll let people suffer in a "anything for results"-attitude, especially if no one takes them to task. Hell, I'm from Bremen, and in the early 2000s we had a case here where an African suspected drug dealer was force-fed emetics. He fell in a coma and then died. It took a decade and several trials until the doctor responsible was forced to give 20,000€ to the victim's family. (I don't think he was actually sentenced though, but rather they stopped the trial and that's a settlement.)
I just want to scream in horror. They stopped just short of evicersating him in a search for "narcotics". I can't even fathom the horribleness of being subjected to that many invasive procedures against his will. THEN billing him for it?
I really hope he sues till these people don't even breathe without asking permission.
Even taking the scenario that'd go easiest on the doctors - that the cops lied and said they'd seen the guy swallow or insert drugs and they were afraid of what could happen if the container broke - there's still no excuse for all that. Imaging should have been sufficient to prove there wasn't any foreign body present.

While I think even doing one anal cavity search was unnecessary, doing multiple ones, multiple enemas, x-rays, and a goddamn SURGERY is unbelievable.
