Not just a purplish state, but a purplish state with a lot of government employees living and shopping and going out to dinner in it, but not so much right now.

I don't imagine this shutdown is doing any Virginia Republicans any favors save for those in the super-red districts.

I imagine having Cruz appear was the price of bringing in national wingnut, er, tea party funding, but it sounds like a bit of a devil's bargain.

Especially since not all Republicans are happy that he's doing what he's doing. Might completely backfire on him.

Ted Cruz is like that comic with one joke that he just keeps repeating over and over and over again. Good lord, I'm not sure if I should be more annoyed/disappointed/angry/etc at Texas Republicans for voting him into office or David Dewhurst for losing the primary election.

The thing is, I'm reasonably certain that Cruz is being funded by the usual suspects, which means that if he somehow manages to be deposed from his carefully safe district, he's almost certainly got a very well-paid job or consultancy or leadership position in a bomb-throwing PAC to move on to.

I don't see the downside for him here. I mean, if he had scruples, but as it stands, not really.

IOW, he's the Jeff Dunham of politics. And John Boehner is his Peanut.

I'm surprised he avoided Cruz. His brand is similar you know trying to outlaw blowjobs and anal sex around these parts.

Quite simply - the Tea Partiers aren't that popular right now, especially as Virginia is full of federal workers. Cuccinelli's five points behind (which means nothing - McDonnell and Cuccinelli had a pretty big voter purge so he can't afford any more bad PR after McDonnnell's crash and burn.
