Sep 22, 2013 17:39

National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre argued on NBC’s Meet the Press that “there weren’t enough good guys with guns" to confront the shooter responsible for last week's Washington Navy Yard rampage and he insisted that "when the good guys with guns got there, it stopped.”In his first television interview since the mass shooting last ( Read more... )

I thought this was an Onion article at first. Where are you going to find more armed people than on a military base?

Actually, you really don't carry on a military base, unless you're an MP. You'll have your weapon if you're going to the field or the range, but otherwise it's in the armory. And no live ammo. They keep that stuff under pretty tight control.

right, because no one in the fucking NAVY YARD, full of military personnel, federal agents, and security guards, would have any guns on their person. definitely not.

As said above, unless you're MP you're not gonna have authorization to carry on base. Concealed carry permit or no.

Well you see no one is ever honest about their intentions so obviously he's doing this FOR THE KIDS because he never said so!

Of fucking course he did.

I honestly don't know why I'm surprised about this. I guess with every shooting, I have a tiny hope that this will finally be the line the NRA doesn't want to cross. But every time I still manage to be surprised. I should know better by now.

Actually, military bases keep firearms under really tight control, and live ammo even tighter. Nobody is armed unless they are going out to the field or the range, or there's some kind of ceremony. The MPs are armed, but really very few other people would be. And LaPierre is crying about the fact that military personnel cannot carry their personal firearms on post. Also, there would have been more armed personnel if it wasn't for the sequester. There should have been 11 security guards at the time, and they only had 6, IIRC.

What I wonder is why LaPierre doesn't stop and consider that maybe the military keeps things so tight on their bases for a reason... they have had some experience with managing large groups of weapons and people, after all.
