Is it too much to ask that people just stop shooting each other? You'd think that would be the easier than the reverse.

Stay safe, everyone.

We went to the flea market Sunday

I noticed a large uptick in the number of stalls with guns

It's going to get worse before it gets better, unfortunately

I can't understand this at all, surely the logic of "if they don't have guns you won't need them" is pretty solid..

Unfortunately, people will counter with "criminals will always find ways to get access to guns." And I'm sure it's true in a minority of cases, but these people also don't realize that if you cut down on the amount of military-style weapons available, mass casualties will decrease exponentially.

also, they hide behind the whole, i want guns to defend myself thing, but it's really almost a fetish thing, it seems to me, from the outside. i think until we confront the gun culture in this country-ie the idea that guns are in fact deadly, and dangerous weapons and NOT toys-we can't really explore strong regulations or even reasonable restrictions to help curb this mess...

Yes, exactly. This country LOVES to pretend it's about the second amendment and the right to self defense, when really it's about gun fetishism.

i mean-and i meant to amend my statement-there are plenty of people who have like, A gun in their home for protection-i'm going to be buying a house in the spring, and I'm in St. Louis; I will have a handgun, as a single, 29 year old female in the city, just to be safe. but i used to work out at an AFB and christ, the level of machismo and talk of how they were outfitting these guns like they were model cars...until that mentality changes? nothing will change.

The thing is, I rarely if ever hear someone who has one for protection spouting off about it. Because they understand that if you have one, keep it quiet. If someone KNOWS you have a gun, they can use it against you. My father is one of the gun fetishist asshats, and it's all about power and intimidation, plain and simple, which is part of the reason why he's so vocal about it.

yes, EXACTLY. and they don't mind the idea of more gun regulation, usually.

no, i have a friend who, in every other aspect, is a great person; we disagree on a lot of political stuff, but we're always very cordial and mature about it, unless the gun thing is brought up. it's so bad, i've had to hide him from my newsfeed cause he's always posting stuff about the nra and stuff...it's disgusting.

That sounds like something that would happen around here...depends on the type of gun I suppose, there are plenty of people who enjoy target hunting (I think).

To be fair - I can completely utterly understand purchasing shotguns and single-shot rifles around here, as this is still a substantial hunting area and I have zero problem with people going out to hunt deer (and they actually do eat it so... fair enough)

That's about all I am comfortable with though.

Not OP, but we live nearish to each other in Virginia and yeah. They def sell guns at flea markets here. Getting guns here is super duper easy.

In VA a private citizen can sell a firearm to another private citizen with exactly zero questions asked or backgrounds checked.

It's... yeah.

There was a thing in Wisconsin where these two guys showed up to a farmer's market with AK rifles. Like who the fuck thinks that's a smart idea??
