Pinellas schools say cheerleading uniforms are dress code violations

In a perfect world, every father would think his daughter is beautiful. David Fraser agrees. "Yeah, but she's actually beautiful," he says of his own daughter, 15-year-old Jeana. "I mean, she looks like a cheerleader ( Read more... )

This is the sort of thing that gets me oh so conflicted.

On the one hand, I am not here for the sexual double standard and a girl is a person of worth whether she's wearing a burqa or a bikini or nothing. On the other... time and place. I couldn't wear something as revealing as this uniform to work and that was in a pretty casual environment, and I think I'd get talked to about professionalism if I wore it to med school.

Decency for time and place, yes.

I can wear jeans to class, but I would be expected to dress more formally were I presenting at a national meeting, say. My dress would be appropriate to each of those situations. To get closer to the scenario here, I did ballet and performed at times in just a leotard and tights - not school appropriate, but de rigeur for dancers, I don't see a huge issue with saying school wear should be more covered up, while the cheer uniform - which isn't as skimpy as some - is appropriate to that activity.

Why do you get grumpy when you see clinical staff walking around in scrubs? Isn't that what they're supposed to be wearing?

I am also curious, genuinely. I'm entering a health profession, and I really want to understand the culture of hospitals. Is it frowned upon? Why?

So by that logic, students should be allowed to wear swimming costumes in class too.

After all, that's what the swim team wears when they represent the school.

But I can see being frustrated if the cheerleaders are allowed to wear short skirts & bare arms when all other students are required to have short sleeves and skirts that go down to the knee.

I agree that these dress rules are kind of strange (though I also understand that having students distracted is problematic). But given the rules, I think the better solution is to redesign the cheerleading uniforms to meet the school dress code, or redesign the dress code to allow the cheerleading uniforms.

Do people actually get distracted by what other people are wearing? I can't remember a single time, even when someone is breaking the dress code, and I was distracted enough by what someone was wearing to not be able to pay attention in class, or even really care.

Most teenagers get distracted by the other gender, as a general matter. The hormones are surging, and the body is trying to convert from growth to reproduction mode.

And clothing exacerbates that how? A 'distractingly' attractive person is going to be attractive no matter what they're wearing.

I'm not going to argue with you about whether clothing that exposes more skin is more sexually arousing than clothing that exposes less skin.

So you think that seeing a girl's arms in short sleeved will cause boys to get boners so they won't be able to concentrate in class. And it's the job of the girls to keep themselves covered to prevent said distracting boners. Okay then.

Some of them even get distracted by the same gender :)

I think med school and work are very different environments from a high school.
