Why The Stoli Boycott Is Misguided And Dangerous

Boycotting a Russian brand of vodka does nothing to help LGBT people in Russia. What’s worse, it might do more damage than good.

This boycott is stupid, but I also really don't think that the sponsorship of lgbt events by alcohol companies is something to be celebrated and encouraged

Perhaps not, but I do think it's relevant here in terms of showing the boycott is misplaced. Gee, here's a company that's willingly associating themselves with LGBT events and people... we should totally boycott them?

Yeah, that's what confused me too and really shows how lazy these people got in their slacktivism--so lazy you couldn't do a google search!

out of curiousity, why?
stonewall was way more about drunken debauchery than marriage

you don't think that alcohol abuse is an issue in our community or that centering so many events around alcohol makes those events not very friendly to folks who are in recovery? In my area, so many community meetings, fundraisers, special events, etc take place in bars. This doesn't seem to be the case with other activist groups I've been a part of

in nyc, which has a plethora of space-options, most activismy events that i have been aware of involve alcohol. if anything, my own anecdata is that lgbtq (emphasis on the t and q) circles do take investment in securing alcohol free events. even outside of the gay center itself.

but i hear what you are saying. and if **that** was the argument savage was even trying to make, i'd pretend to have patience with the man.

(my annual pet peeve is folks complaining during pride about how it's "too much" about hooking up.)

Exactly what I came here to say. Aren't there higher rates of alcoholism than usual within the LGBT community? Alcohol companies exploit us, imo. :/

Yeah, it's probably a side issue. And no disagreement regarding Savage

MTE. It makes it unsafe for people with alcohol problems, unpleasant for people who don't like being around alcohol (or drunk people) for other reasons, and since people don't magically become LGBT when they reach the age they can legally drink, it also means either aiming alcohol ads to kids and minors or excluding them.
