It's not racist! Asian people just have funny names! And they're good at math and can't drive! -_-

I'll be over here seething with rage at the entire world.

Sorry for getting a little OT here, but when did "Asians can't drive" become a stereotype? I'm seeing it all over the place lately.

I'm not sure. I've been hearing it my whole life, ever since my bus driver in elementary school was Korean and somebody's parents pitched a fit about how she must be a bad driver because it's in her genetics.

Wow. Just wow. Genetics. I don't even know where to start.

Idk but I've been hearing it for almost three decades.

I haven't, but in IRL I pretty much live in a social semi-vacuum of my own making and avoid talking to people if it doesn't have to do with the whatever business is at hand if possible. I've just seen it on the internet over the last year or so as I started venturing into more social media sites.

No clue, but the "can't drive" stereotype has been mentioned here a ton (along with "they need to open their eyes"): http://publicshaming.tumblr.com/post/54791337536/idiots-use-plane-crash-in-san-francisco-to-mock-asians

Don't know what it's based on, but I've been hearing that my whole life.

Wow. These people think they're so clever, but cracks like these are really the low hanging fruit of the humor-verse.

I wondered about that, too, prior to seeing what some of the other people posted re: genetics and eye shape. Even without having seen that, there are plenty of people of European descent who grow up in large cosmopolitan areas like NYC and never learn to drive or own a car until they find themselves transplanted, and they don't seem to have a stereotype about them.

Plus there's some real willful ignorance in thinking that Americans would fare all that well trying to drive under the same driving conditions present in a city like Tokyo.

I've heard something similar about Arabs. Being from Detroit, I hear the stereotype that Arabs can't drive quite a bit, and it's often justified because "they don't have cars back home."

You know, I've only heard it when people are being "ironic" and sarcastic... but at this point it's been "joked" about enough that it's seeming to become a stereotype in it's own right. Which kind of says to me that the ironic comments are hurtful in and of themselves.

Don't forget the small penises and big swords. All Asians are ninja warriors.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that they all do karate and carry samurai swords. That's why Asian countries don't have terrorism! (I legitimately heard that from my father once.)

I had no idea that "Asians can't drive" was a thing until an Asian friend told me. And then I was like, "And white Americans think they can....?"

IKR? In my experience, most people can't drive. Turn signals? Speed limits? nah!
