Pro-Choice Speaker Dragged out of Senate Meeting In Texas

Pro-choice advocate Sarah Slamen tried to give her testimony in the Texas State Senate this morning about a proposed bill that would not allow abortions after 20 weeks, even in the cases of rape and incest.

However, during her speech Slamen was taken out of the building by state troopers for calling out Texas State Senator Donna Campbell (R) for being an ophthalmologist, not a women’s health specialist as she has been portrayed, noted the Daily Kos.

“It was destiny that [Republicans] would discriminate against us and try to force your way inside the bodies of Texas women," Slamen said. “Thank you for finally working against women so publicly, and not in the shadows like you’re used to" (video below).

She added: “Thank you for every single bad press conference with your bad information. Thank you for every hateful statement degrading women and girls to sex objects, and brood mares, and bald eagles and leather wallets, like your eloquent pro-life supporters have done today.”

Slamen suggested that Campbell referred to herself as an expert on reproductive health, even though she was an ophthalmologist, which deals with eye care.

"Sen. Campbell, you’re an ophthalmologist, so I won’t be making you the expert on reproductive health," Slamen said. “We can give you all the children with chlamydia and herpes in their eyes since we don’t have sex ed in this state."

State Senator and Chairwoman Jane Nelson (R) interrupted Slamen and refused to let her continue. Moments later, Texas state troopers grabbed Slamen and escorted her out of the building.

As Slamen was escorted out, she said: “Everyone on the internet can see what you’re doing right now - this is a farce."
