Texas Senate - Davis continues filibuster to stop abortion bill

Jun 25, 2013 14:58

Before a packed chamber and gallery, state Sen. Wendy Davis began a dramatic filibuster Tuesday morning designed to block passage of a controversial and politically charged anti-abortion bill.

Because the special legislative session will end at midnight, the Fort Worth Democrat could succeed if she continues talking on Senate Bill 5 without ( Read more... )

Odd question. Because she can only speak about this bill can she just repeat the same thing over and over again if she starts running out of notes? Because right now it sounds like she's reading emails/letters she's been sent. Could she re-read those later?

Not sure how it goes with the Texas constitution but at the federal level you can read recipes or recite Shakespeare if you so chose. It doesn't matter what you say as long as you keep talking.

The article says that she can't go off topic. No idea if she can repeat herself though.

Ah, missed that bit. I'm sure if she starts weakening or runs low on material, the other Dems will step in by asking her questions.

The article I saw said that she's still soliciting more stories, and aids are bringing them to her as they come in, so she has more to read.

I just saw something like that on tumblr, a link to send in stories. I was pretty sure aides could bring in more materia. I'd suggest the reproduction section of a health textbook. Or something like "What's Happening to Me?" or the "Period Book" or "What's Happening to My Body? Book for Girls." Just to make sure legislators are aware how female reproduction works.

Absolutely! It's both on topic and, judging by some of the comments, sorely needed education.

I think it has to stay on the topic of the bill only. They were talking about Roe v Wade earlier and the republicans started questioning whether it was relevant to the bill. I stepped out for a sec, but right now she already has 1 warning (idk if it's for the roe v wade talk or something else). She gets 3 before they force her to end the filibuster.

Man state filibusters aren't any fun. Give me a federal one anyway. At least there I can pick up good recipes.

Federal ones are stupid now- you don't even have to talk, just say I am gonna filibuster Nyah Nyah and that's enough

It's like some sort of bizarre Tarkin Doctrine for fillibustering. The fear of the use of fillibustering is more effective than the actual fillibuster...or something.
