Bill O'Reilly - Commencement has become a decidedly liberal affair

Jun 06, 2013 17:31

Once again, graduation time is upon us, and a new study by the Los Angeles Times says plenty about the state of higher education in America. The paper looked at the invited commencement speakers for 150 colleges and universities.

There are just four conservative speakers, as opposed to at least 69 liberal ones.Cory Book, the mayor of Newark, N.J ( Read more... )

I'm confused though, why would BU staff boycott the Alexa event? I mean I wouldn't be proud of BU for that. Maybe I'm misreading this or missing something, but why would anyone boycott a fundraiser for someone who was a victim of sexual abuse/rape trying to raise money for other sexual abuse victims? I live in the boston area and had never heard of this Alexa thing before, but I've only been living here for about 4 years.

Don't be embarrassed. I don't know if you misread it. This whole thing is worded poorly and is confusing.

Well, I don't think that we have to support causes just for the sake of causes, if the causes use douchebags to stump for them. For example, even though Candie's promotes teenage pregnancy prevention I think they do it all wrong and they use Bristol Palin as a promoter, so I wouldn't go to a thing for them. I also wouldn't go to a sexual assault fundraiser that has, as their stumper, a person who has made a point of saying douchebaggy things against women - including repeatedly and deliberately distorting Sandra Fluke and attacking her on screen; getting sued for sexual harassment, regularly bashing women who choose to hve abortions and spraying invective against the abortion rights movement...etc. In fact, I would wonder why a foundation that raises money for sexual assault victims would WANT him to come promote their fundraiser/benefit.

As a similar example, a few years ago the rapper Nelly wanted to hold a bone marrow drive at my undergrad college - Spelman, a historically black women's college. His sister was in need of a bone marrow transplant, and given that matches are more likely to happen within race, he wanted to hold a drive at Spelman to see if not only he could find a match for his sister but increase the African Americans on the bone marrow list. Nice, right? Except that Nelly has written terrible lyrics about women and often has half-naked black women gyrating in his videos, including one in which he slid a credit card down a woman's butt cheek. Why would we want a man who so callously abuses women in his lyrics and videos to come use our campus to stump? And even then, Spelman didn't ban him from campus but the students wanted him to host an open forum on misogyny in hip hop before he did the drive. He threw a fit and called it off.

Why should we allow ourselves to take abuse from people just because they do something nice?

No, you're right. I misunderstood before. Also I kept on forgetting bill O'reilly was writing this. I was taking it too literally and again just not remembering who it was that was saying this. I should know betetr. and also not forget!
