Chicago police on Friday night launched an investigation into what led an off-duty officer to shoot and kill his neighbor's dog.
The officer, an eight-year veteran of the force, said he was out with his young son on the 5800 block of North Oketo Avenue, on the city's far northwest side, when Maximus, a four-month-old pit bull, charged at them

Honestly, this does kind of sound like the guy had a vendetta against the dog.

.....I gotta imagine his son is suffering too, having to watch Daddy blow away a little girl's puppy in front of them.

A five year old kid was with the dog when the asshole unloaded 8 to 9 rounds into the puppy? WTF? This is all kinds of fucked up! AND the family gets TWO citations? AND that asshole cop's son was a block away during the shooting?
I hope the family gets the justice that's due them. In no way should this kind of fucked up behavior be tolerated. When they say that law enforcement is one of the professions that psychopaths are attracted to, I do believe that. Which is not to say of course, that all cops are psychopaths.
And why the hell is the officer not named in the article? Why is he being protected?

Quite possible. In the video report, the officer is hidden out of sight as he is interviewed. He sounds really dismissive and unapologetic for traumatizing a 5-year old girl by murdering her puppy right in front of her.
Bonus for new information from the family's facebook stating that they had previously been threatened, insulted because of being on government assistance, and gave them a hard time for being the only Hispanic family on the street.
Dude is a shame to the badge, no two ways about it. Even if he didn't plan to do it, which is PRETTY FUCKING UNLIKELY, an officer with such an enormous lack of judgment is dangerous and has no business on the streets. Those are the kinds of officers that shoot someone for trying to get their wallet, and claim it was a gun ( ... )

There's a big difference between a dog that want to play and one that wants to eat you and if you're even vaguely familiar with dogs, its generally really obvious if the dog's coming at you like a freight train of WUV or murder.

The people justifying his actions in the comments make me SO ANGRY, primarily because they either think "pit bull = killer mutant death machine" or because HEY if a dog is off leash it's fair game! Which are both very disturbing mentalities, in my personal opinion. It should never be okay to blow away someone's dog simply because they managed to get loose.

Clearly a killer, look how she's mauling that squeak toy!

1. OMG SO CUTE DOGGIEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. I hope cops are rarely in the vicinity, who knows how they'd react to a pitbull with a toy...
