We had something similar happen at my college a couple of months ago with an anonymous posting admitting to sexual assualt, and while no police investigation was opened, it caused a huge outcry against the administrator of the site who should been responsible for not publishing things like that. Instead he insisted that the right to free speech trumped other people's rights not to be triggered.

That's disgusting. Did anything happen to the administrator? And did they find the perpetrator?

nope. there was no way of finding out who posted what, and since it was completely anonymous it could possible have been a troll.

the administrator had a meeting with the school about his site, the school itself couldn't really do anything, but eventually the administrator stepped down after protest from other students grew too big, but he still insisted on the "beauty of free speech" and internet feedback.

I'm sure someone with strong programming skills could have found the information. Maybe through an IP address?

probably. I am not sure how the system the administrator set up specifically worked. But then I also wouldn't be surprised if the administration of my college wasn't too keen on opening a police investigation, and didn't even investigate the possibility.
