People using their atheism to excuse their racism and xenophobia is the second biggest reason I hate the "atheist community" these days. (The biggest reason being the vitriolic hatred of women.)

I hate that people even construct terms like "atheist community." I want that phrase to just disappear.

I'm not even sure what an 'atheist community' would even be. I mean, I can see people coming together for support if they come from religious families and are dealing with the issues that come with leaving their religion but beyond that I really don't see much need for atheists as a group to come together.

also, I find it interesting that this article throws Hitchens into this but neglects to mention that he died in 2011

It's in there.

"Dawkins has so far remained silent on the attacks whilst Hitchens, who passed away in December 2011 after a long battle with cancer, is unable to defend himself. But Harris has not been willing to let sleeping dogs lie."

I started reading a Dawkins book once, got a few pages into it and was basically like wow, this is the best we can do as an ~atheism representative~? He's such a condescending prick.

He's such a condescending prick.

That's his appeal for a lot of people. Including a (younger) me.

He's such a condescending prick.

I loathe him, and it makes me sad that Lalla Ward married this asshole.

White men from privileged backgrounds will always need to fight against an almost ingrained urge to be racist. I don't know how else to say that.

Also: You don't have to read any so-called holy book to be critical of it. You might not be able to make great arguments that people will believe, though.
