I was reading comments on articles about this, and they were full of Republicans who seriously believe Obama is stealing taxpayer money to send his kids on vacation. They seriously cannot comprehend that the Obamas have enough personal wealth to afford this trip, and that going to an Atlantis resort in the Bahamas isn't some sort of lavish trip by the standards of someone as rich as the Obamas. Of course, Republicans generally hate to leave the country so I guess I would expect them to assume that the sunnier a place is, the more over the top and decadent it is going there.

They sent them to Atlantis? Okay, a) not that crazy-expensive AT ALL and b) totally side-eyeing the Obama's taste in vacationing spots at the moment.

That's what I read, but basically any resort hotel in the Bahamas isn't going to be a crazy expensive vacation compared to, well... a lot of other vacations. I travel a lot and sitting in one place on an island that's really quite nearby is always going to be relatively cheap compared to a lot of travel options. If these people are wanting to hear about lavish vacations, let me tell them about my dream holiday scuba diving in the Galapagos, about six thousand dollars a person.

Six thousand dollars is the budget version of the short version of that trip; I don't price first class airfare and room upgrades, or more than a week in that case.

Yeah, seriously. There are a lot of way more expensive places the Obama family could go -- that's what weirds me out, is that Atlantis is a place we considered going for a family vacation and we're not even nearly close to the Obama family's socioeconomic status! And while I get the desire to sit on your butt at the beach, there are a lot of resort hotels in the Caribbean you could go to that are a little less focused on creating a totally controlled experience and let a little more local culture in. Which is why we ended up not going there after all.

I know for fact that the owners of Atlantis have a more upscale expensive resort Atlantis is good if you're bringing children on the trip. You couldn't pay me though to go to a place like that thousands of people all over the place.

We looked into it for a family vacation with my inlaws, who really don't travel well and are in to the all-inclusive thing. (Also, I am all about seeing all the fish.) We decided to pass because the cost/awesome factor didn't line up -- it was at the tip-top of what we wanted to spend and wasn't awesome enough to justify it. If I'm going to sit on my butt on the beach I want at least a little local culture in there.

lol, on my facebook i referred to atlantis as a packaged vacation for unimaginative upper middle class people, which is sort of rude but generally true. if someone took me there i'd be legit disappointed, but i'm the kind of person who won't get on a tour bus unless it's literally the only way for me to get to a location.
