well, we call it the bedroom tax, but what it is in reality is that anyone on housing benefits who has more bedrooms that the government has deemed necessary lose 25% of their housing benefit payments.
this policy applies to the whole of the UK, even though it is primarily London that has a problem, for instance. not that i think the problem is actually created by housing benefit claimants rather than a lack of council housing being built or such like, nooooo... >_>
Wow. That's just unbelievable.... and it sounds like something the Repugs would love. After all, we can't have poor people living in anything that resembles comfort, right?
yeah, that's it really. a few poor people have an extra bedroom! OMG, my tax should not pay for that.
what i wrote down below is their attempt at packaging, but yeah, obviously the real reason is that they are trying to curry favour with conservative voters who feel that people on welfare are somehow better of than them or something weird like that.
I can think of a reality show that the world would actually benefit from: Take a family who thinks that welfare recipients live better than they do, and have them live on only welfare for six months. See what happens.
And make them live in the sort of housing most welfare recipients have to live in, so they can see what it's like to have to decide between fixing the leaky roof or feeding their kids.

but yeah, the media just love to write about 'welfare queens' whenever cuts are on the agenda, just to make people try and believe they are necessary.

What's that, a tax on extra bedrooms?

But... why? I don't even understand the logic behind that. Is that because there really is none, or am I missing something obvious?

I so want to see welfare/foodstamp critics go through this.

No hot water, or AC/heating.
And make it so others can judge what they are allowed to eat and buy.

Well, no one can really stop anyone judging anyone. Not that it's cool. But some loud judging in the grocery store wouldn't be amiss.
