Oh my God, that poor girl.

That said:

Sailors’ lawyer says his client is a Vietnam veteran with no prior criminal history and thought he and his wife were about to be victims of a home invasion. “You have to understand this is a 69-year-old man who is a military veteran who has been honorably discharged,” Michael Puglise says. “He dedicated his life to community service, specifically the Christian Lay Ministry in Latin America.”

I hate this line of reasoning so fucking much. He shot and killed someone who was trying to get away from him; this man's ~spotless military history~ (lol) doesn't matter worth a fuck.

I actually said "FUCK YOU" out loud as I read that. So what if he's a military veteran? So what if he's dedicated his life to community service? She still went batshit crazy and killed someone who was no threat to him. Jesus.

MTE. And neither does his "community service." The fact that it was with Christian Lay Ministry in Latin America just makes me want to throw up more, not forgive him.

SERIOUSLY. I don't care if he's mother theresa, he shot a guy in the head who did him no harm! that makes him an asshole who shoots first and asks questions later. jesus, you can't even turn around in someone's driveway anymore without fear of getting killed.

"I shot some people once and that was okay so I'ma keep doing it and use this as an excuse for my completely ignorant fuckwit behaviour"

Exactly! Like, how is his military service- which denotes that he shot people for a living -supposed to showcase his innocence in this case?

Exactly. And that "specifically the Christian Lay Ministry in Latin America" will no doubt be pulled out and danced around should allegations of racism come up.

Future Sailors Online Defender (who doesn't personally know Sailors): "Oh, but he's dedicated his life to bringing the Word to those godless sava- I mean, those people down there who are in need of God's love! The poor fellow made an honest mistake!"

Yeah, he could have dedicated his life to petting fuzzy kittens for all I care he still shot a teenager trying to get away from him.

Seriously WTF

How could you POSSIBLY think you were about to be the victim of a home invasion because of some people in a car in your driveway? Oh, wait, I guess they had brown skin so clearly they were criminals.

I hope this guy goes to jail for the rest of his life.

No shit! So what if he's otherwise some kind of saint? He shot and killed a 22 year old who wasn't doing anything to him, and that kid isn't here any more.

There are an awful lot of people out there who do evil, horrible things without having a prior record. I hate that whole "he doesn't have a criminal history!" as if that proves anything.

Trigger warning: Sexual assault

Not to veer too heavily off topic, but I see this shit all of the time with sexual assault. The assailant gets their charges knocked down over and over again to just "aggravated assault" or "battery" or what the fuck ever because they don't have a "criminal history" with sexual assault. It's as though people don't understand that, in order to build a fucking criminal history for a crime, you have to charge them with it in the first fucking place.

Ugh so much rage, I'm sorry

I see it too, where the "sexual" part is diluted or removed, and since most background checks only include the final charge, just from looking at a record you can't tell whether it started as something much much worse.

Why does that happen? You'd know more about the application of this than I would, but it honestly makes no practical sense to me as to why states would undercharge someone for a serious crime and then let them back out on the streets.

Well, not that criminal dockets give a lot of information, but I imagine some of it is plea bargains, I've seen a few statements of prosecuting witnesses recanting or not testifying, etc. I've seen enough "sexual abuse of a child under [some appallingly young age]" get amended to something non-descriptive to make me sick sometimes.
