I hate that I have to worry about whether or not my SO will get paid or not every time this comes up. :(

Yeah, I'm a USG employee and the sole wage earner for a family of 5. I hate that I have to worry about how I'm going to pay my mortgage and feed my kids with no money coming it. Pretty much guarantees that I'll vote republican five minutes after NEVER, though.

If they are active duty look into getting a primary (direct deposit) account with usaa or navy federal - they have consistently guaranteed to deposit your expected pay in the event of this happening. Love them.

I totally don't understand what the problem is, and why the US is so broke - it is only since 2008 that I keep hearing about these horrible financial crises. Why don't the fucking senators agree to take a few months without pay in order to pay your service men and retired vets?

It is because before 2008 they raised the debt ceiling with no argument because Congressional Republicans weren't acting like 5 year olds who didn't get their way.

What they (above) said. It's all manufactured crises to score points.

It's great that I have to worry about whether I'll receive my Social Security whenever this happens, but they don't have to worry about their pay being stopped.

“Republicans in Congress have two choices here. They can act responsibly and pay America’s bills, or they can act irresponsibly and put America through another economic crisis. But they will not collect a ransom in exchange for not crashing the American economy.”

“That’s not a credible way to run this government,” Obama said. “We’ve got to stop lurching from crisis to crisis to crisis when there’s this clear path ahead of us that simply requires some discipline, some responsibility, and some compromise.”

That's the man I voted for. :)

That's why I'm glad he got a second term, and could not give less fucks about being re-elected. NOW it's time to get shit done.

Can we just take the pay away from Congress instead, since it'll be their fucking fault?

Interestingly enough, the last time the issue was brought up there were a small group of Congresspeople that refused their pay on those grounds.
