Justin Bieber given Diamond Jubilee Medal by Harper; Twitter explodes over wardrobe choice.

Our Prime Minister is a Belieber.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper met with 18-year-old pop singer Justin Bieber Friday in Ottawa, just ahead of the performer's concert, to present him with a Diamond Jubilee medal.

The medal was created this year to mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne.

Stratford, Ont., native Bieber is one of 60,000 Canadians to receive the medal, which the Governor General's website says is to honour "significant contributions and achievements by Canadians."

Harper tweeted about the encounter: “Was happy to present @justinbieber with a Diamond Jubilee Medal today” and posted a photo of himself and the Biebs, who is seen wearing coveralls and a backwards hat while shaking the Prime Minister’s hand.

Twitter quickly exploded with reaction, much of it critical of the young man's attire.

There were sarcastic cries of "Classy!" One user wondered why Bieber had dressed "like Salt N Pepa" to meet the PM, and another said the prime minister had an awkward meeting with a "young farmer."

Bieber, who was busy on stage while the Internet buzzed, offered only this tweeted clue to his wardrobe choice earlier in the day: "Overauhls. lol."
