I always feel a bit weird because my coming out story isn't all that cheerful and happy and I feel like people want happy stuff for coming out day (things are much better for me now though)

Most of my friends' coming out stories are very traumatic. I recognize how lucky I was.

Seriously, I feel like we get this narrative shoved on us that coming out is always an awesome, happy, liberating experience, and if you don't want to come out you're a coward and a traitor to the cause, and if you came out and didn't like it you're just erased, and I'm sick of it. I know coming out is a good experience for some people, and I'm totally happy for them, but I feel like we're pressured to consider that a universal experience, which it just isn't.

That's real and not uncommon. I don't think it only has to be rainbows--queer youth are too smart to buy that anyway. :)
