(Reuters) - Taliban gunmen in Pakistan shot and seriously wounded on Tuesday a 14-year-old schoolgirl who rose to fame for speaking out against the militants, authorities said.

Malala Yousufzai was shot in the head and neck when gunmen fired on her school bus in the Swat valley, northwest of the capital, Islamabad. Two other girls were also wounded ( Read more... )

I don't understand this need to oppress women so much. Is it because we bleed from our vaginas? Is it because we are genetically predisposed to be fetus carriers? What the fuck. I just don't understand it, I don't at all.

It's probably a combination of the higher testosterone in men, plus 40-week pregnancies, plus years of female fear leading to both complacency and active furtherance of patriarchal views.

We just need to stand-up for all women/all oppressed groups regardless of how much power the powerful have. Like this mother cheetah! http://youtu.be/3IwDHvNxjJo

It's quite sad, that in general, we seem to be more like chimpanzees than out other closest relative --the bonobo.

I read this comment three times and I still have no idea what you're talking about. I feel like I've failed.

Bonobos, once's called "pygmy chimpanzees," were thought to have been a sub-species of the chimpanzee. But we now know that they are an entirely different species and we are equally related to them as we are chimpanzees (and recent findings indicate that we share DNA with bonobos that they don't share with chimpanzees, and we share DNA with chimpanzees that they don't share with bonobos ( ... )

oh, huh. That's interesting, I didn't know that. Bonobos obviously live the good life.

I thought bonobos were our closest match? That's what I learned in anthro 101 in 2005, so seven years out-of-date, science may have found we share more with chimps than previously thought.

They hadn't looked into the bonobo genome back then (well, the study might have been going on, but the actual finding were published in the peer-reviewed journal earlier this year).

I believe, because of how much primatologists and anthropologists love bonobos, for a long time many wanted humans to be slightly more closely related to bonobos than chimpanzees and would find behavioral reasons for that opinion.

Based on what I read, at times it seems that humans are more closely related to bonobos, and at other times it seems that humans are more closely related to chimpanzees but it seems that it might be due to variation on the individual level. Usually it seems that we're slightly more closely related to chimpanzees, but most believe that's more to do with the larger population size of chimpanzees (and I think they're more adaptable/slightly less specified). I think most agree that the ancestors of humans split from the bonobo+chimpanzee ancestor about 4-7 million years ago (so we should be about equidistantly related to each) ( ... )

If I recall my Big Cat Diary correctly, that is the same mother cheetah who has actually charged and ran off a lioness who was threatening her cubs. Lions? Pish! The lady was a BAMF.

Cheetah's are just pretty awesome. Did you happen to see African Cats? (No offense to lions though, I love lions...they are so affectionate to each other...and well to whomever they deem "family" http://youtu.be/HB9RXjXoI7c)

You are the only person who understands my Big Cat Diary obsession (that and Xena were the shows I grew up with), it's nice to "meet" you. LOL!

Honey's death was so heart-wrenching though :-( (read, if you're emotionally strong):

I watched the whole run of Big Cat Diary during a period of spotty employment. Never seen African Cats, but I'm sure I'd like it. I love kitties. Especially cheetahs and leopards.

Yeah, I already know what happened to Honey. It was so horribly stupid. WHY they felt the need to tranq her, I have no idea, because cheetahs just aren't that aggressive. Maybe it was her rep with running off lions?

At least the cubs got to grow up. Still, Honey should've had several more years of being the baddest cheetah on the savannah. :(

I missed the later episodes/seasons of Big Cat Diary because of school, but I'd read about it. If I remember correctly, it was a practice of the preserve to tranquilize the cats and give them vet-checks, to check them while they're awake I guess would get them too used to being handled by humans? Plus I think in Honey's case, they wanted to check the cubs out. It was probably an honest mistake, but...UGH! So sad. There's such a shortage of cheetahs (due to a combination of human-related and unrelated factors) that it's so sad.

And, yeah, you would like African Cats :-) rent it or buy it if you get a chance!

Oh! You can still get updates on the Masai Mara cats, there's a blog. Let me get you the link! Here it is!

My understanding is that it's because you tempt menfolks from the path of righteousness, or somesuch. We need to strictly control your sexayness to keep ourselfs pure. If only you didn't turn us into raging bonerfiends, then we'd truly have peace on Earth and ascend to the Kingdom of Heaven. Praise Jeebus/Yahweh/Allah.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me either, and I have a penis.
