The battle for white men

BURLINGTON, Iowa - They arrived here in droves in the pouring rain to hear Vice President Joe Biden, an ocean of white guys. There were men in overalls and some in suits, hardcore Democrats and wavering Republicans, undecideds and first-time voters, the unemployed and the angry.

After decades of taking a back seat to the ( Read more... )

Yes, please.

"Election 2012" would be a good start.

It would have been nice to use a "men" tag, but we don't have one, other than "men suck," and this wasn't about that.

If we have a "women" tag, we ought to have a "men" tag, just because otherwise, it kinda feels like "men=default=don't need to specify."

If straight white men are really "in play" that would be politically correct for "The Republicans are boned."

“I found it offensive [i.e. Romney's comments about the so-called "47%"],” said Rob Hach, a registered Republican in Iowa who voted for George W. Bush and John McCain. “It cemented my view that I wasn’t voting for him [Romney]. We elect officials to represent all of the people. He [Romney] made it clear he wouldn’t be representing me.”

Good, here's one guy who GETS it. Let's hope there are LOTS more like him.

This one, otoh... *facepalm*

“I look at my billfold, and I ain’t voting for Obama,” says Brehm. “I am making $2000 less a year than I was four years ago.”

Because, OF COURSE, that is exclusively Obama's own personal fault. Which AUTOMATICALLY means Romney will make things better. Idiot.

I don't think it's very helpful to just categorize the block as white men. You have consider what kind of white man you're going for here. Interestingly, the GOP is seeing an increase in the number of non-college educated white men, traditionally the Blue Dog Democrat type, swinging in their direction. Of course, they have completely different interests than the country club or yuppie demographics, which could make them hard to hold.

I think its complete suicide when you have a demographic that overwhelmingly supports one party over another. Once you're in a party's back pocket, you're pretty much going to be taken for granted and ignored. So I think that the GOP will probably only spend it's time stretching for blue collar white, professional middle class white, and Latinos. Anything else, they either already have or they know they can't get, so it would be a waste of resources.

Yeah, I agree that the media is ridiculously vague with every group.

On a related note, I just saw some commentary that stated that if you take away Southern states, which are going for Romney anyways, Romney is about 50-50 with white men. This is devastating! If he can't even get white men on his side, he's screwed. Ouch...
