Global bacon shortage 'unavoidable'

Experts say the world could be on the verge of a significant bacon shortage because of rising feed costs and declining pig populations.

Britain's National Pig Association said Tuesday that an international shortage of bacon and other pork products is now "unavoidable," and expects higher prices for consumers ( Read more... )

Word. I like it on BLTs (it's real good with mayo), but that's about it. Eating a couple of loose strips with breakfast doesn't appeal to me - I'd rather have sausage. People who want to put bacon on EVERYTHING drive me nuts.

Someone I used to know carried bacon LIP BALM. BACON LIP BALM. And a friend of mine likes bacon chocolate chip cookies. Do. Not. Understand.

I happen to like bacon, and kind of miss it here in Europe (prosciutto is not the same), but I offer the following as examples of bacon-related ridiculousness in Oregon:

The Oregon Bacon Bar (I worked at a Made in Oregon during Xmas - we sold out several times)

Rogue's Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Brown Ale (granted, this seems to have been a case of 'challenge accepted' in reaction to the simple existence of Voodoo Doughnuts, but still....)

That ale was tasty. Also, one of Boise's doughnut shops totally stole the bacon maple bar idea from Voodoo. Haven't tried it yet, but it sounds good.

My sister sells bacon fat chocolate chip cookies. They are surprisingly good and her best selling cookie. (half the butter is replaced with the bacon fat)

Have to admit, I don't understand either, but I saw a tv personality making pig candy once and was just so flabbergasted and curious I -had- to make it just to try. It... delicious... o.O! And on ice cream it's doubly delicious (even while my brain is still going "WTFbacononicecreamWTF?")

I will have the ugliest hissy fit you've ever seen if you take away my jar of maple bacon grease, though. Bacon I can live without (even with my insane love of pig candy), but my bacon grease is sacred. It's the best thing for seasoning my cast iron pans and for cooking with. Some serious love there.

I think its partially because american breed animals very, very lean to call it healthy. leaving bacon really the only remaining fatty part of the pig, which is really the tasty part. fat gives it flavor. the superlean cuts that dominate market aren't as tasty, so putting bacon on them adds the fat back.

Never thought about that, but it makes perfect sense!

Idk, I'm guessing it's because it's oily and fatty and salty?

I don't eat it that much.

It's because it is delicious.
