It was the best. Seriously. Better than Dark Knight, Imho, because it was an impossible challenge from the get-go and both Marvel and Joss made it work so seamlessly.
It really helped that they chopped up the character background in separate movies. Coming into this film, I had really high expectations and I'm still reeling from the fact that Joss exceeded all of them.
The movie was clever and subtle. I love how the characters fed off each other's weaknesses and strengths. No one stood idly by. Every moment was visceral to the plot.
I think the fight scenes in the city encapsulated exactly the kind of movie this was - the transition from Hawkeye jumping backwards from the top of a fucking building to the chase scene between Loki and Black Widow to the rest of the Avengers fighting on - everything was connected, fluid, and the plot movement and cinematography were breathtaking.
The banter! Which were all witty and delivered with maximum effect. I mean, aside from the physical in-fighting, it was a surprisingly fun way to watch how each of the Avengers related to one other. Simply superb.
Noteable moments: HEAVY SPOILERS
1. I've been compromised. - I love the Black Widow - Hawkeye relationship that Joss hinted at. I mean, we've only seen Hawkeye once before, in Thor, and if you're not familiar with the Avengers universe, you wouldn't know his background or his relationship with Widow. But in a few scenes, Joss managed to depict the depth of his relationship with Widow.
Basically, from the very beginning, when Coulson called Widow in and told her that Clint had been taken - and her face. Her face, how it changed dramatically from impatience to murderous.
2. Coulson's death
It put the 'Avenge' in Avengers.
I cried. I really did. It was hard to shift from one emotion to another. The transition between scenes was fast paced. But when that moment happened, the whole cinema cried out and I burst into tears.
It was horrible, but I do love how Joss reined in the dramatics. That moment showed the vulnerability of the team and highlighted the importance of setting aside their differences to avenge their friend. It wasn't overly stated, but you could feel their anger, their loss and their thirst for revenge.
3. HULK THE WHOLE MOVIE
Mark Ruffalo was the best Hulk. He was amazing. That final fight scene, where he catches IronMan while Thor and Cap hover. That scene was classic.
4. Loki and Thor
Loki managed to stay charming throughout the movie. I couldn't shake off the sympathy he gained from me in Thor. He was pure evil in this movie, just batshit crazy. But I loved how Thor was determined to bring him home. Their love-hate thing. Just enough to make Thor the kind of god I want to pray to.
ALL IN ALL, it really was, for me, the best superhero movie ever. Also, the cast is amazing, as if we didn't already know that. They are real life friends and that chemistry certainly translated onscreen.
"For an entire take, they are all giving these seductive, come-on faces," Hiddleston says. "I had to fight to keep a straight face."
Where is that quote from?! :D Gah I love that cast to bits, can you imagine a sequel?! A THIRD?! This franchise needs to stay awesome and go on forever and ever.
I love your review, you've said basically everything I was planning on saying (before I dissolved into fangirl hysterics). Everyone felt important, and I agree with you entirely, no one felt tacked-on whatsoever and all had their role in the plotline. The flawless cinematography in that fight sequence, the one long shot which showed everyone fighting for New York, Coulson, the Black Widow/Hawkeye dynamic (Tony's romance was so sweet as well! I love his dynamics with Pepper and how much of a cute puppy he is around her), and Loki was fantastic and Thor and everything was pefect.
Seeing this movie again very soon and I'm even more excited than before now I know what I'll be seeing.
I can't believe how good it was. An larger Avengers franchise would be fantastic.
I just watched it again, actually (3D was a little confusing; could only focus on a few things). Stuff I didn't notice before came to light - this time 'round, I appreciated just how poetic Phil's character was. Oh god, he's basically the underline hero of this movie, right?
That scene, where Fury tells him to focus on him, Phil whispered something - I didn't catch it the first time - I think he said something along the lines of, "It's all right. This wouldn't have worked anyway without -"
And it hit me and my sister. We basically grabbed each other in the theater, teary eyed again and whispered, "He knew."
IT WAS THE AVENGERS' SNAPE MOMENT. Coulson seemed the unlikely candidate to provide a the spirited heroic 'push' - I mean, why wouldn't he be the one? He kind of brought them all together.
I can't. I still can't.

Oh, absolutely. I think we can all go on for thirds and fourths! Ah ♥ ♥ ♥ so much love right now
Yes, yes, yes, yes, to all of that. Woah, they managed to get such HISTORY between Black Widow and Hawkeye, and convey it through just a few scenes. Wow. And it was beautiful. Hell the two of them on their own was each beautiful, a character that I'd love to watch and follow. But the dynamic between them, the way Black Widow totally changed when she found out Hawkeye was compromised, the way Black Widow acted okay on her own, but then that scene with Loki, and and and. Loved it.
I loved Coulson's death too. I hated it. I wanted to throw something. I couldn't believe it. But it was so, so good. And it really was the Avenge in Avengers. (I WANT HIM TO BE OKAY SO BADDDDD.)
Hulk and everybody. Anybody. Hulk will POWN you. (He beat the shit out of both the Asgardians! I love that!)
And Loki was gold in this. Even though he was completely bad, I just loved him. They established some vulnerability for him towards the beginning with the Chi-fuck, Skrulls threatening him if he fails. Not the dynamic I was expecting between Loki and his army, but I loved it worked beautifully. And he and Thor, my heart just broke. I loved their argument on the mountain top. (And the way it ended, oh Tony.) And Thor falling for the same trick, _again_. And Loki and Thor going home together at the end. Loved it all so much.
--- I read that interview!! Scarlett and Downey, they were the main culprits!!!
