Christchurch: Further Earthquakes

Jun 15, 2011 23:46

Christchurch has been hit by a series of earthquakes just four months after the devastating quake in February which killed 151 citizens, and led to 50,000 fleeing for safety.

The first shock came at 2:20 AM on Monday 13th June and registered as magnitude 6.0, similar to the one February 22nd which register magnitude 6.3.

54,000 households were left without power as temperatures dropped to below freezing, and approximately 46 people were treated subsequently, several of them elderly people with hypothermia. Only one fatality has so far been reported, significantly less than the 151 who died in Feburary.

Various aid relief programmes are available to those who wish to contribute to helping those left devastated by both the February and June disasters:

My friend was actually in the February quake, and was lucky he hadn't sold his flat so could fly back here and have somewhere to live. My heart goes out to those who don't have that option. My friend lost everything he had in New Zealand, so I know from his experiences how devastating it was to people's lives.

Here's hoping they are able to rebuild after this and have peaceful futures...
